Menopause Q&A

What is menopause?

Menopause is defined as the last menstrual period that is confirmed after 12 months of not having a period. This typically occurs between ages 45-55 and causes a decline in estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, and other hormones. It is a normal, natural life event.

Declining hormones can cause a range of symptoms from mild to severe, including hot flashes, night sweats, thinning and dryness of the vaginal tissue, decreased sex drive, sleep problems, weight gain, cognitive changes, and low mood and anxiety. It can also contribute to chronic diseases, including heart disease, osteoporosis (thinning of the bone), type 2 diabetes, and metabolic disease.

While it is natural, it doesn’t mean that women have to suffer and allow it to wreak havoc on their bodies and brains. Hormone therapy can be a safe and effective solution when provided under the knowledgeable guidance of an experienced practitioner.
